Michael and Minay's First Long Vacation Together
Nine Days, Fom Houston to North Carolina, and then Tennessee
Before Coming
Back to Houston
June 17th to June 25th, 1991
Actually, there were a few driving vacations before this one, but this was the first one we considered a "real" vacation. We took a two-week honeymoon trip to Colorado in 1982, and a few short two or three-day trips [Austin, Galveston, Dallas--all Texas, of course]; nothing of any duration except the honeymoon trip. There were too many other factors at work on the honeymoon to consider it a true vacation, of course.
Finally, in 1991, we decided we had both enough time and money to afford a driving trip partway across country. Minay loves the Smoky Mountains, so we decided to head for North Carolina. These images were taken with some kind of a point and shoot film camera (I don't even remember what anymore), have been scanned and saved to floppies, then to Zip disks, then to CDs, and then reopened and reduced in size several times, so don't expect terribly good quality on the images.

Houston to North Carolina, then back to Kentucky -- Welcome signs, rain, kudzu, the Carl Sandburg house, the Biltmore Estate, more rain, Cumberland Gap in the Rain, Berea, and Pleasant Hill Shaker Village.

Kentucky across the South toward Houston -- a historic fort, a wedding...and a little more rain, the Museum of Appalachia, Geneva & Shorty's at Cookeville, TN...no rain, then driving along the Natchez Trace, then Houston.
